The Animals

Meet The Animals

Lavender Waves Farm is home to a whole crew of animals — and they're a big part of every visit. Come say hi and see how many you can find!

Ricky & Kirby — our llamas

Our two llamas, Ricky and Kirby, are part of the farm's guard team. Like their alpaca cousins, llamas are camelids — but bigger, bolder, and famous for their large ears and bigger personalities. They'll stand their ground to protect the herd, and they're always up for a photo.

Our Alpacas

We have a herd of five alpacas. Alpacas are gentle South American camelids raised for their incredibly soft fiber. They're herd animals, so you'll usually find them together — grazing, humming, and occasionally spitting at each other over grain (it's how they argue).

Humphrey, Bingham & Jack — our camels

Yes, we have camels in Rhode Island! Humphrey is an Asian Bactrian camel — the two-humped kind, built for cold weather. Bingham and Jack are dromedaries — the one-humped Arabian camels built for hot desert weather. Same family, very different climates. Together they are three of Rhode Island's four privately held camels, and Bingham and Jack are the only Arabian camels in Rhode Island. Our camels travel to weddings, parties, parades, and live nativity scenes — but here at the farm, they're just part of the family. (Please note: we don't offer camel rides.)

The rest of the crew

Lilly and Giulia are our livestock guardian dogs — Lilly is a Spanish Pyrenean Mastiff and Giulia is an Italian Maremma Sheepdog. They patrol the fields, watch the skies for hawks, and keep every animal on the farm safe.

Leonard is our barn cat, and he has a story. He was a feral cat who was hit by a car and fractured his pelvis, spent months recovering at a veterinary hospital, and then came home with us. He's incredibly sweet and a huge hit with visitors.

And we have a whole flock of birds: gold lace Brahma chickens, Welsh Harlequin ducks, African guinea hens, Pilgrim geese, and white peacocks. Keep your camera ready.

Visiting the animals

The animals are part of every farm day — open days, private tours, events, and suite stays. A private group tour is the best way to meet everyone, with the stories to go with them.
